What is Stephen Ministry?
Stephen Ministry is a one-to-one lay caring ministry providing high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people experiencing loss or dramatic changes in their lives.
A Care Receiver is a St. Francis parishioner over 18 going through difficult life changes who would like a person to listen and pray with them.
- The relationship between a Care Receiver and a Stephen Minister is confidential – only the Care Coordinator and your Stephen Minister know your name.
- Men are matched with men; women with women.
- Stephen Ministers are trained to listen and assist you. While we are not counselors, we are able to fill a very special role to help you through tough times.
- When a Care Receiver’s needs exceed what a Stephen Minister can provide, the Stephen Minister will make a referral to an appropriate professional or other community resource.
You may request a Stephen Minister who will walk with you through your healing and faith journey by contacting the Parish Office at (515) 223-4577 or the Stephen Ministry Care Coordinator, Carol Pearson, at (515) 865-6729. Also with their permission, you may refer someone from our parish you feel would benefit from a Stephen Minister.
Stephen Ministers are lay people of our St. Francis community who discern and apply to become a Stephen Minister. They are trained to provide high-quality, one-to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. Twice a month, Stephen Ministers gather with their Stephen Leaders and other Stephen Ministers for supervision and continuing education.
How Does Stephen Ministry Work?
After a discussion with the Stephen Ministry Care Coordinator about your situation, prayer and careful assessment is completed to determine an appropriate Stephen Minister match. Then you and your Stephen Minister usually meet once a week for about an hour. Together you determine the best time and place for your weekly meeting. Your relationship continues up to a year as long as you both feel it is beneficial.
Interested in Becoming a Stephen Minister?
The Stephen Ministry group at St. Francis continues to actively help our parish in so many ways. During the last four years, over 80 people have experienced the benefits that our Stephen Ministers have provided. This specialized Christian care has not only allowed healing to those hurting, but also enriched the hearts and lives of our own Stephen Ministers.
To continue the success of this ministry, our leadership team will hold a new Stephen Ministry training session beginning the end of October. If you feel called to serve, please complete and return an application. Applications are available in the Parish Office or below. To learn more about the application process and training program, contact Jeff Gust at (515) 802-9545.
