Deacon Dan Dombrosky
Jesus asks us the same question he asked his disciples in today’s Gospel: “But who do you say that I am?” Jesus isn’t looking for a superficial relationship. He’s not asking us to just check the Christian box and be Catholic in name only. It’s not enough to know what others say about Jesus; we need to encounter, know, and respond personally to him. Only then will we truly hear him explain to our hearts the mysteries of his loving plan of redemption.
During diaconate formation, we were asked to answer Jesus’s question. Here’s what I wrote: “Because of you, I believe all that God has revealed through the Scriptures, Sacred Tradition, and the Church. You are the way, the truth, and the life. I know you more when I act on what I believe and do good works for others in your name. I become closer to you through prayer, especially when I share my heart and receive whatever you may reveal to me. I know you best when I am able to deny myself, take up my cross, and follow you.”
What’s your answer to Jesus’s question, “But who do you say that I am?” Spend time reflecting on it this week. Write it down. There are no wrong answers. A deeper personal relationship with the King of the Universe awaits you!
