This weekend, we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. Many Catholic families in the US have some cherished traditions that include adding the Three Kings to our Nativity sets and leaving our Christmas Trees up until the Baptism of the Lord (1/12). I want to draw your attention to one of my favorites – the Epiphany House Blessing.
What is the Epiphany?
The word “epiphany” comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, meaning “manifestation” or “appearance.” It is a sudden realization of truth – an ah-ha moment. This feast celebrates Jesus as the Son of God, revealed to the Gentiles through the visit of the Magi.
Why bless your house?
Catholic families use this day to invite Christ’s presence and protection into their homes for the new year. The blessing is often marked by writing the initials of the Magi (C for Caspar, M for Melchior, and B for Balthasar) and the current year over the main doorway of the house: 20+C+M+B+25. These initials also represent Christus Mansionem Benedicat, meaning “May Christ bless this house.”
House Blessing Prayer
“Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill us with the light of Christ, that our love for each other may reflect your love. Amen.”
Blessed chalk and instructions are in the Narthex after Mass this weekend. Please take one per household while supplies last.
