Have you recently heard someone mention “OCIA” and wondered how it is related to “RCIA” or “Becoming Catholic”? You are not alone—OCIA stands for the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, the new name for what was once known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
This change was made as part of a larger process in which the Church updated the English version to be a more faithful translation of the original text. The wording may be new, but its essence remains the same. It is an experience of personal formation and spiritual growth.
Modeled on the initiation rituals of the early Christian Church, the OCIA invites adults to deepen their relationship with God through prayer, study, reflection, and discernment. It combines public rituals and community preparation to guide individuals on their path to becoming Catholic.
Are you, or someone you know, interested in becoming Catholic? At St. Francis, we offer ongoing formation throughout the year, which means your journey can begin whenever you are ready. Whether you are already baptized, new to Christianity, familiar with Scripture, or just beginning to explore the faith, we meet you where you are and walk with you through each step of your journey.
If you would like to learn more about becoming Catholic, please contact our Adult Faith Formation Coordinator, David Reising, or visit the “Becoming Catholic” page on our website for more information. saintfrancischurch.org/formation/becoming-catholic
