The mysterious and infrequent process of electing the next successor of Saint Peter, commonly known as a conclave, has been the topic of much focus since the passing of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, of blessed memory. As everyone focuses on who could be the next pope or the mechanics of the conclave itself, it is important to fulfill our role in the conclave.

While we may not be cardinal electors, the whole Church is called to take part in the conclave, by praying for cardinals and for the next pope. If we believe that our prayer is efficacious, why do we pray for a family member who is sick or a friend who is grieving? Why not pray for the cardinals and the next pope?

Imagine if every Catholic around the world were united in this prayer. To help you join in this prayer, I have included the opening prayer for the Mass, which will be celebrated by the cardinals the day before they enter the Sistine Chapel to begin the election of the next Roman Pontiff.

O God, eternal shepherd, who govern your flock with unfailing care, grant in your boundless fatherly love a pastor for your Church who will please you by his holiness and to us show watchful care. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen
