Many Stars shine brightly in our nation: athletes, politicians, musicians, and corporate CEOs. Many people, young and old, search for happiness by following them. This Sunday’s Gospel focuses on another star and search. In it, the Magi come to Jerusalem following a star they believe will lead them to the newborn “King of the Jews.”

I wonder, which star are we following?  Where is our search leading us? What other “stars” sometimes tempt us to follow them?

We live in a world that often glorifies fame over service. Money over people, and sometimes our National flag over the Christian cross. These are embedded in slogans we hear each day.  “Look out for number one.” “Get what we can.” Or “Back your country, right or wrong.”

But there is a different and better path. It leads to a life in the fullest, and ends at that small manger in Bethlehem.  We will find it through prayer, worship, service, and social justice. It’s not an easy path, but Christ calls us to walk it.

Like the Magi, our faith may at times unsettle others, but the Lord believes in you. He has chosen you and walks with you through everything. The Magi understood that God often works through those the world considers powerless, accomplishing great things through humble hearts. So, when you feel powerless, remember their wisdom. And like them, may we rise each day with courage, trusting the Star of Christ to guide our steps.
